Where to Bet

On and Off Course Race Betting

If you are coming to watch the horse racing and you want to place a bet 'on course' there are many chances to do so at the Derby race meeting, alternatively you can place a bet 'off course' by placing a bet online or visiting a betting shop.

At the Epsom Derby meeting there are numerous bookmakers and rail bookmakers, Tote and a number of betting shops.

A Word of Caution - if you are placing a bet with a bookmaker ONLY do so in the clearly marked 'Authorised Bookmaking Areas', otherwise you may return to collect your winnings only to find the bookie has disappeared!  Unfortunately, such unscrupulous characters do exist, this has happened before but it can easily be avoided by taking the precaution described above.

Bookmakers or Bookies

Can be found in many locations around the Derby Meeting with the largest collection of bookies in the tattersalls area in front of the Grandstand.

Each bookmaker will have it's own stand or pitch with a board or electronic display showing prices or odds and horse list.

When you have made your decision on the horse you are going to back, have a look around and see which bookie is showing the highest odds for your horse, then line up and make your bet.

Minimum bet with a bookmaker in the Grandstand is £5.

Rails Bookmakers

As the name implies, Rails Bookmakers are similar to regular Bookmakers but stakes are much higher and they can be found along a rail separating the tattersalls and members/ club area.

Rails Bookmakers take bets from other bookmakers, credit customers and those in the members/ club area.

Tote

Tote is a government owned bookmaker that can be found in numerous points around the Derby Meeting both around the course and in the Stands.

Betting with Tote is very different to betting with a bookmaker as you do not know what your winnings might be, should your bet win, until after the race. The reason for this is that unlike other bookmakers, Tote operates on a pool basis and any money bet in a particular pool is shared out among the winners.
TV screens and electronic displays around the course will show current odds for each horse giving a good indication what your bet may return, but until betting is closed and the race is underway the final amount in the pool is changing.

Profits made by the Tote organisation are used to support racing in numerous ways.

Minimum Tote bet is £2.

Internet and Online Betting

If you want the easiest way to bet, then make a bet online. Without having to venture out to the bookies or line up in a busy queue to place a bet and/or collect your winnings at the races, using a PC from the comfort of your own armchair or desk, you can make a bet online.

There are numerous Internet Betting Services which may appear to offer similar or identical services but there are benefits of using certain services for example Tax Free Betting and others you should be wary of. Like all internet websites there are the good, the bad and the potentially hazardous.

On Course Betting Shops

These are very similar to off course betting shops but allow bets to be placed on other non-Derby events happening elsewhere. There is usually television coverage showing the various events which are on.

All winning bets are subject to a deduction (normally 6%) which go towards racecourse improvements.

Off Course Betting Shops

Off Course betting shops can be found all around the country.

For over 35 years a 9% betting tax existed, but with increased competition from the internet and services overseas, the government abolished the tax in October 2001 heralding a new era for the betting market.
