Derby Introduction

The Epsom Derby is by far the most famous and prestigious flat race run anywhere in the world. The Derby is regarded as the ultimate test and attracts only the best horses. Now in its 224th year, having first been won in 1780 by Diomed, the racing continues to thrill and entertain with total prize money at stake exceeding £1 million for the Derby alone. On the 6th June 2003 the Derby horse racing begins with the Vodafone Oaks and Vodafone Coronation Cup followed by the main event the Vodafone Epsom Derby on 7th June 2003.

The Derby is run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs, each three year old colt carrying 9 stone. The fillies and the older horses also run the same course and distance for the Vodafone Oaks and Coronation cup respectively.

Tens of thousands of spectators make their way to the Epsom Derby annually to watch and experience the thrill of the finest thoroughbred racing classic. The crowds come from a complete cross-section of society including racing followers, corporate groups, day trippers, gypsies (who also provide the fun fair) and of course Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
